Residents question wind farm scrutiny

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 12 October 2010

Residents near a wind farm proposed for Mortlake in south-west Victoria say the project should have undergone an environmental effects statement.

Last week, the State Government approved 51 turbines for the farm but refused to grant permission for the other 46.

It wants more information about what impact those proposed turbines could have on the brolga population.

Susan Dennis lives at Kolora and says the project should have been properly scrutinised from the beginning.

“If a proper environmental effects statement had been carried out years ago, we would not have gone through all this trauma and drama that we’ve gone through for the last year in particular, it would have deemed then that there were too many brolgas here and it was just not the right place for a wind farm,” she said.
