Brumby to face wind farm protest

Michelle Ainsworth, Weekly Times Now, www.weeklytimesnow.com.au 7 October 2010

Community members will protest against proposed wind turbines near Hepburn Springs tomorrow.

The protest is planned for Premier John Brumby’s trip to turn the first sod for the Hepburn Wind community-owned wind farm at Leonards Hill.

Daylesford and district landscape guardians’ president Jan Perry said the group had been fighting another community group running the farm over its location for five years.

“It’s the proximity of the wind turbines (to homes), not the turbines themselves,” Ms Perry said.

The landscape guardians want the industry regulated with limits on how close the wind turbines can be built to homes.

Ms Perry said the turbines will be 500m from the walls of the closest home and only 750m from other homes in the area.

She said the noise from the turbines will be up to 35 decibels, there will be a shadow flicker across the houses from the turning blades and some electro-magnetic interference from the wind.

She said the noise from the gears and the turbines will run 24 hours a day.

“It all boils back to the health of us; there will be no more quiet days.

“This is my first little house that I’ve worked all my life for, I didn’t know this was going to happen to me and not 700 metres from my wall,” Ms Perry said.

The protest will be at Leonards Hill, near Daylesford, at 10:30am tomorrow.
