Nimmitabel wind farm gets federal approval

The Boco Rock Wind Farm at Nimmitabel, estimated to cost $700 million to build and provide up to 200 construction jobs, has cleared another major hurdle by securing approval from the federal government.

This follows the go-ahead given by the state government in August despite continued opposition from a local anti-wind farm group.

Federal approval was confirmed by the development director of Wind Prospect CWP, Ed Mounsey, which is an independent wind farm development company based in Newcastle.

He said the company had worked closely with all stakeholders and were delighted with the decision.

He said progress was being made towards starting construction next year and to maximise the benefits to local businesses a “contractors” page had been added to the project’s website.

“I encourage all those parties that have already made contact with us to re-register their interest through our website to ensure we maintain accurate records,” he said.

The wind farm will be located six kilometres south west of Nimmitabel. It will comprise up to 122 wind turbines spread over 17 different properties with the potential to produce more than 840,000 megawatt hours of electricity a year – enough energy to supply 120,000 average Australian homes.
