Group plans protest meeting on project for wind turbines

A public meeting has been organised by a group opposing a proposed wind farm on the site of a former coal mine.

Peel Energy wants to build up to 10 410ft turbines on the former Asfordby colliery site, near Melton.

A Stop the Turbines group (Stop) has been set up to fight the proposals and leaflets have been delivered to 1,500 homes in the area.

The group has also enlisted the help of Belvoir Locals Opposing Turbines (Blot), who have won at two public inquiries into similar proposed projects in the Melton area.

It is urging people to make their objections known by writing to Melton Borough Council and to Rutland and Melton MP Alan Duncan.

Stop member Chas Edgington said: “There are about 10 of us in the group, spread across the borough, with expertise in areas including planning, noise, health and safety, wildlife and equestrianism.

“About 1,500 leaflets have been delivered to households. The developers will tell you their side of the story but it’s very important for people to understand the whole story.”

Peel Energy, which held two drop-in sessions in the area in the summer, also organised a fact-finding tour to a working wind farm near Scunthorpe last month.

The company is also planning public exhibitions later this month.

Project manager Patrick Keogh said: “We are confident that we will be able to respond positively to any issues when we share our proposals with the community at the public exhibition.”

The action group’s public meeting is on tomorrow at 7.30pm at The Stute , Welby Lane, Asfordby Hill.

Peel Energy’s public exhibitions will take place on Wednesday, October 27, from 9am to 7.30pm at The Stute; Thursday, October 28, from 9am to 2.30pm at Asfordby Parish Hall, Main Street, Asfordby; and from 3.30 to 7.30pm at Ab Kettleby Primary School, Wartnaby Road, Ab Kettleby.
