MP vows to fight wind farm proposals at protest meeting

Wind farm protesters from across the Burnham-On-Sea area flocked to a public meeting on Friday evening (October 1st), where they received the backing of a local MP.

Ian Liddell-Grainger, MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset, was among 50 people at the meeting in Pawlett, as pictured. He aired his opposition to the controversial plans for 14 wind turbines at East and West Huntspill.

Mr Liddell-Grainger told Burnham-On-Sea.com: The fight against the wind farm proposals goes on. I will do all I can to halt the scheme.”

“The government wants to put power back into the public’s hands to help them control their own destiny – this is an example of where that can happen.”

Brian Crosby of the East Huntspill wind farm protest group, told the meeting: “The turbines would be nearly 400ft high, which is almost as high as Brent Knoll. They would be a real blot on our landscape.”

And John Wakefield, Chairman of the Huntspill wind farm protest group, told the meeting: “These monsters will tower over the area and will be noisy and inefficient. They often work at only 25 per cent of capacity and we would need 3,000 turbines for them to replace a nuclear power station.”

EDF and Ecotricity, the companies behind the plans, hope the proposed wind farm will generate enough power for 10,000 homes a year.

The Huntspill Windfarms Action Group also announced that it is to hold a fundraising Pledge Auction on the evening of Saturday 13th November at The Balliol Hall in West Huntspill. Entry will cost £5, to include a glass of wine and nibbles.
