Lectures on wind turbines to be held

At the same time that Wareham citizens are debating a wind-energy project, a newly formed advocacy group called Windwise Cape Cod will hold a series of free, public lectures and question-and-answer sessions in October entitled “Industrial Wind Turbines: Coming to a Town Near You.”
“We believe the people of the Cape and Islands have the right to hear an unfiltered analysis of the issues so they can make informed decisions about what is best for their own neighborhood and town,” said Sheila K. Bowen, the president of the organization, in a press release.
Windwise -Cape Cod (WWCC) describes itself as “an advocacy group of Cape Cod residents opposed to the irresponsible siting of industrial wind turbines on the Cape, the Islands and the South Coast.”
The three-part lecture series will be free and open to the public, and will discuss “the environmental, economic, and health risks associated with the current design for harnessing wind energy,” according to the group.
On Thursday, October 7, Physicist and environmental advocate John Droz Jr. will present “Our Energy Future: Determined by Science or Lobbyists?” Droz will discuss the science behind our energy choices, with a focus on wind energy.
The following Thursday, October 14, Eleanor Tillinghast, an environmental advocate and co-founder of Green Berkshires, Inc., and the Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters, will discuss “The Massachusetts Wind Rush!,” an overview of the state’s energy profile and policies arguing that wind power won’t solve, but will create, problems in Massachusetts.
On October 21, Michael A. Nissenbaum, M.D., will present via Skype his assessment ‘Adverse Health Effects Associated with Poorly Placed Wind Turbines,’ which discusses the health impacts of industrial wind turbines among residents of the towns of Mars Hill and Vinalhaven, Maine. Dr. Nissenbaum is a radiologist at the Northern Maine Medical Center, Fort Kent, Maine.
All lectures will begin at 7 p.m. in Science Lecture Hall A, near Parking Lot 7, at Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Lyannough Road (Rte 132), in West Barnstable.
