Spring Lake opposes wind turbine

SPRING LAKE – The Borough Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to adopt a resolution opposing the 325-foot-tall wind turbine planned by the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs for the National Guard Training Center, a state-owned area that lies within the nearby boroughs of Sea Girt and Manasquan.

The resolution, adopted without discussion as part of the consent agenda, included language similar to that of resolutions recently adopted by Sea Girt and Manasquan opposing the $5 million federally funded project.

The Spring Lake resolution states that when wind turbines of the scale planned for the training center site are erected in developed areas, they “appear to be impractical, obtrusive and generally result in an overall negative impact to the community and property values, and tend to lessen the quality of life for residents living in proximity to the turbine.”

The resolution claims research shows large-scale wind turbines can affect properties three miles away, which would include Spring Lake.

As part of the resolution, the council requested a public meeting to discuss the turbine with the project manager of the Army Corps of Engineers’ New York District, Adjutant General of the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard Maj. Gen. Glenn K. Rieth, Gov. Chris Christie and the state Department of Environmental Protection.
