Action group fights turbines

Melton Times, www.meltontimes.co.uk 30 September 2010

‘Stop the turbines’ is the rallying call of an action group fighting proposals for a windfarm near Melton.

Peel Energy wants to build up to 10 410ft tall turbines on the former Asfordby mine site.

Campaigners fighting the proposals have set up an action group, under the banner STOP, to rally support with thousands of flyers being delivered to local households.

The flyers, entitled Wind Turbine Threat, claim how residents will affected and in which areas they live in as well as questioning the effectiveness of the proposed turbines.

The action group is also inviting residents to attend a public meeting on Wednesday (October 6) at 7.30pm being held at The Stute (Holwell Sports and Social Club), Welby Lane, Asfordby Hill. The group claims that speakers with first-hand experience will be present.

It is also urging people to make their objections known by writing to Melton Council, to Melton MP Alan Duncan and by contacting the group themselves.

It’s understood protesters opposed to the mine site proposals are looking to enlist the help of campaign group Belvoir Locals Opposing Turbines (BLOT) who played a key role in defeating plans for a windfarm in the Vale of Belvoir.

STOP member Chas Edgington is due to meet Melton MP Alan Duncan tomorrow to discuss concerns.

He said: “There are about 10 of us in the group, spread across the borough, with expertise in areas including planning, noise, health and safety, wildlife and equestrianism.

“About 4,000 leaflets have been delivered to households. The developers will tell you their side of the story but it’s very important for people to understand the whole story.”

Earlier this month Peel Energy held an open day to demonstrate the scale of the turbines, running a trip to Bagmoor Windfarm near Scunthorpe for people interested in learning more.

And in August the firm held two community drop-in sessions for residents and nearby businesses.

Peel Energy was unavailable for comment as the Melton Times went to press but speaking previously company spokesman Matt Richards said: “We believe Asfordby mine is a good location and we’re keen to discuss our proposals.”
