Bill aims at more wind power

WORLD-HERALD WASHINGTON BUREAU, www.omaha.com 28 September 2010

Wind power generation efforts in Nebraska have been slowed historically by the fact that the state’s utilities are publicly owned and ineligible for federal tax incentives given to private utilities.

A bill introduced this week by Sens. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., and Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., aims to change that – allowing public power utilities access to the same incentives as their private competitors in other states.

“With access to these energy development tax incentives, our nonprofit public power utilities will be able to build renewable projects at a lower cost to their ratepayers and begin construction quicker, leading to more immediate job creation,” Nelson said in a press release Tuesday.

A similar bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives.

No action on either bill is expected until after the November election.
