Wind turbine in Sea Girt would hurt quality of life

Asbury Park Press, www.app.com 23 September 2010

Do you love the beaches in Sea Girt or Manasquan?

Maybe you enjoy playing with your children on the sandy shores? Or relaxing with friends on the beach? Or surf fishing? Or surfing? Or walking for miles on the beautiful stretch of beach from Belmar to Manasquan? Or bike riding along the boardwalks in Spring Lake and Sea Girt?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, have you heard about the 400-foot industrial wind turbine that the state is planning to build on the National Guard base in Sea Girt?

The giant wind turbine will be 25 percent taller than the radio tower in Manasquan. When spinning, it will make continuous low-frequency vibrations similar to those of a jet landing. It will also cause shadow flicker, a strobe light-like effect across a significant stretch of land near it.

The effects of an industrial wind turbine can be felt for 1.3 miles. As such, it will affect private residences, schools and businesses in Sea Girt, Manasquan, Brielle, Spring Lake, Spring Lake Heights and Wall Township.

The illuminated tower will be visible from Asbury Park to Bay Head.

There are numerous environmental, economic and health reasons to oppose this turbine. Please go to our “No Sea Girt Turbine” page on Facebook to learn more details.

I urge readers to join other area residents in the fight against this turbine. Please write to your town councils, state representatives and Gov. Chris Christie to voice your opposition to this project.
