Bats battle windmills

Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast, mdmorn.wordpress.com 22 September 2010

Massive wind turbines have been going up along the mountains of western Maryland since the middle of the summer. It’s part of our state’s efforts to get 20 percent of its energy from renewable sources by the year 2022.

Some ecologists are objecting to the spread of windmills; they fear the turbines could cripple the bat populations, which are already under threat from a disease that’s killing off cave-dwelling bats in New England and the Mid-Atlantic.

For more on the danger wind turbines pose to bats, Nathan talks to Dr. Gwen Brewer, program manager for science programs at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
