Sedgwick to vote on proposed wind power moratorium

SEDGWICK – Voters in Sedgwick will decide whether to enact a local moratorium on wind power development when they go to the polls Nov. 2 to help select Maine’s next governor, weigh in on state referendum questions and cast ballots for state and federal legislators and county officials.

A hearing on the proposed moratorium on wind power development will be held Thursday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Sedgwick Town House.

A copy of the proposed moratorium ordinance is available at the town office or online at www.sedgwickmaine.org.

According to the proposed ordinance, “wind power development” refers to “any wind energy facility consisting of one or more wind turbines, the purpose of which is to primarily generate electricity to supply to off-site customers.”

The ordinance would apply to substations, cable and wires and other structures accessory to a wind energy facility.

First Selectman Nelson Grindal said the proposed moratorium and referendum were brought by a citizens’ petition seeking to have the question presented to voters in the Nov. 2 general election.

Grindal said organizers of the petition are concerned about potential problems from commercial wind turbines sited too close to the general public in Sedgwick, as well as potential noise or other negative effects.
