Wind farm rejected but battle goes on for campaigners

Anti-wind farm campaigners near Cockermouth said they were prepared to continue fighting, despite an application for six turbines in Tallentire being turned down.

The village’s Margaret O’Hare, said: “We’ve won the battle but the war is far from over.”

Mrs O’Hare added she was delighted that Allerdale council’s development panel rejected Renewable Energy Systems’ plans for six 328-feet high turbines at Hill Farm, north east of Tallentire.

She said: “This is far from over. We know that they will be back but we’ll be ready for the fight.

“We have campaigned for four years to get this decision and it feels great.

“West Cumbria already has enough turbines. Enough is enough. We are sick to death of having to fight but we will continue if needs be.”

Craig Baker, who has lived in Gilcrux for 20 years, said: “We are sick and tired of seeing these structures being built. The whole area is compromised and I am very concerned.”

Ian McCambridge, of Tallentire, said: “The turbines proposed would be dominant and intrusive. On-shore turbines are controversial and would deter tourists.”

At the development panel meeting on Wednesday, Coun Martin Wood said that the area would benefit from the turbines, which would create enough energy for 6,700 homes.

Coun Bill Jefferson described the proposal as frivolous.

He added: “We should reject this and any such like it because West Cumbria is full up.”

l A CONTROVERSIAL scheme to build 410ft turbines at Threapland Lees, near Aspatria, by BT was scrapped before the development panel met.

The company said that technical issues were behind the move.

Local people fought a 12-month campaign against the scheme and formed an action group. Allerdale council received more than 900 letters of objection.
