Turbine visit confirms villagers opposition

Opponents of the proposed wind turbine site near West Hunstpill say a trip to another turbine site has only confirmed their opposition to the project.

The developer Ecotricity, which wants to build five wind turbines on a site near the village, organised a trip on September 2 to take West and East Huntspill residents to the site of one of their other wind turbines, at Shooters Bottom on the Mendips.

But Julie Trott, of the West Huntspill Wind Farm Action Group said the trip hadn’t changed the villagers’ minds about the project, and they would still be resisting attempts to build the 120-metre high turbines.

She said: “I was horrified by the amount of noise the turbine was making. It was far noisier than any of us had imagined, like an aircraft continually taking off.”

“I came away from the visit with the impression that our lives and quality of life are of little importance to the energy companies behind the proposals. This is all about money.”

A spokesman for Ecotricity said the purpose of the visit had not been to change the residents’ minds about the project, but to allow them to have an “informed opinion”.

“The idea was to give those who had never been to a site more information and the chance to see a turbine for themselves.
