Rockport holds off committing to tri-town turbine committee

Rockport – The Rockport Select Board got an earful about wind turbines at its regularly scheduled Sept. 13 meeting from Rockport and Camden residents skeptical about the public and environmental benefits of erecting wind turbines on Ragged Mountain.

That idea is gathering momentum with the Camden Energy Committee, which recommended to the Camden Select Board last week that Rockport and Hope join the discussion in a three-town committee. Rockport has been officially invited to join a tri-town committee but on Sept. 13, selectmen were hesitant to commit before understanding more what the Camden Energy Committee is proposing.

“We have time to ruminate on this,” said Town Manager Robert Peabody. There is time to respond, he said, but as a neighboring town, the representation of Rockport in future talks is vital.

The Select Board agreed to discuss the wind turbine on Ragged Mountain proposal again, and is soliciting applications from citizens who might want to serve on the tri-town committee, even though there is no firm yet decision yet to join it.
