Robbins Island windfarm proposal

Tasmania’s Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has begun assessing a $1.2 billion wind farm proposed for north west Tasmania.
The owners of Robbins Island, west of Smithton, want to install up to 220 wind turbines on its western side.
Key issues identified by the EPA include potential effects on flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.
The director of the EPA Warren Jones says public comment on the proposal closes on September 24.
“Some of the key issues that we’ve identified are bird and bat mortalities, windfarms are a potential source of mortality and the north west corner of Tasmania is quite an important area for birds,” he said.
“They’re the issues that we’ve identified as the key ones that the proponent will need to look at carefully and describe how they’re going to manage the windfarm so it doesn’t have unacceptable effects on those values.”
