Sea Girt residents protest wind turbine plan

MYFOXNY.COM – Many residents of Sea Girt, N.J., are against a proposed wind turbine, citing aesthetic and health-related reasons. But the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs says that in the long run the turbine will save the residents money.

If approved, the turbine would be taller than the Statue of Liberty. Many residents say that their property values will take a hit.

The $5 billion federally funded project would be built on National Guard training center property.

The city council voted unanimously to oppose it, in principle, after more than 200 residents showed up to protest the plan. But the council has no authority over an army base that is owned by the state.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs says the agency is sensitive to residents’ concerns and won’t build the wind turbine until the financial, environmental, and health effects are completed and permits approved.

The spokesman also says the wind turbine would take the National Guard training center off the local power grid, use renewable energy, and eventually save New Jersey taxpayers $20,000 a month.

If approved, construction wouldn’t be built until 2012.
