First Wind eyeing new project in Piscataquis County

Maine’s largest wind developer is considering constructing 35 turbines along a ridge stretching from Bingham to Blanchard.

Maine’s largest wind power developer is eyeing another project in Maine that could add up to 35 turbines along a ridge in Piscataquis County, near Bingham.

First Wind, based in Massachusetts, told Piscataquis County commissioners yesterday that it was considering building a wind farm along a ridge that stretches from Bingham to Blanchard, about five miles from the Appalachian Trail, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Company officials stressed that the project is still in an early phase, where wind speed and other meterological data is still being collected. It takes about a year to collect such data throughout Maine’s four seasons, and more time to acquire any necessary permits and approvals.

First Wind operates the Stetson wind farm in eastern Maine, northeast of Prentiss, and the Mars Hill wind farm in Mars Hill. The company has two other wind farms in the works, one near the Stetson project and the other on Rollins Mountain, in northern Penobscot County.
