Meeting to discuss windfarm proposal

People concerned – or supportive – about a proposal to build a windfarm on the outskirts of Clare, are being offered the opportunity to discuss the scheme at a meeting organised by two local MPs next week.

Haverhill and west Suffolk MP Matthew Hancock has joined forces with Tim Yeo, MP for South Suffolk, and the pair have announced they are opposed to the plans, which were first mooted in June.

In a joint statement they said this week: “We believe that the visual and other impact of the proposed turbines is completely unacceptable in this attractive rural corner of Suffolk.

“We are not opposed to wind power in principle, but turbines that can be seen from miles around should only be erected where they are acceptable to the communities affected.”

A public meeting is to be held on Friday, September 10, in Hundon Village Hall, at 8pm.

The application for the windfarm is being submitted by BT, which hopes to install up to six turbines in a field outside the town.

It would be on land south of Chilton Street and to the north of the A1092 between Stoke by Clare and Clare.

The proposals are part of BT’s Wind For Change scheme, under which it aims to generate 25 per cent of its existing UK electricity requirements from onshore wind power by 2016.
