Supervisors pass alternative-energy ordinance

Washington Township supervisors passed an ordinance Thursday regulating energy-generating windmills and solar panels.

“We’ve been getting a good bit of interest from people wanting to look into this, and felt it was time to go over the ordinance,” Supervisor James Roma said. “We already have a handful in the township now and anticipate more going in in the near future.”

The ordinance restricts a windmill’s height to 100 feet, including blade-span. If a unit is attached to an existing structure, the 100-foot limit applies to the two as a unit.

The board was told that the owner of a 109-acre farm on Bella Vista Lane plans to submit a minor development plan. Beverly Melcher wants to replace an existing, 1,500-square-foot structure she uses in her dog-training business with a slightly larger steel building.

The township recently denied her request to waive the land development plan.

Also, a representative of the Boyertown Community Library requested that the board consider allocating $1 for each of the township’s approximately 3,400 residents for 2011. Director Mark Sullivan told the board that libraries have been hit hard recently budget-wise and need the funds to continue to operate effectively.
