Council urges more turbine safety checks

ABC News, www.abc.net.au 24 August 2010

The Hobart City Council wants wind turbines in the CBD shut down until it is guaranteed they are safe.

High winds a fortnight ago damaged two of the turbines on the Marine Board Building, causing them to fold in.

The council will ask Workplace Standards to stop the remaining undamaged turbines from operating.

Alderman Peter Sexton says there are still many concerns.

“he principle issue here was one of safety, it wasn’t one of aesthetics, whether or not the turbines look attractive or should be there from an aesthetic perspective but simply from a safety perspective,” he said.

“We are very concerned that there appears as yet to be no Australian standards that are required for wind turbines particularly in an urban setting.”
