Mitchell focuses on regulations

Residents along Lake Huron are furious about proposals to build offshore wind farms they say will destroy their view and damage their tourist-based economy.
Three companies have applied to build 12 offshore wind farms. Queen’s Park has refused to disclose the names of the proponents.
Concerns about the plans and the secrecy have heightened concerns in Huron County, where some residents have fought land wind farms, too.
Much of the heat has been directed at Huron-Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, who doubles in Premier Dalton McGuinty’s cabinet as agriculture minister.
Mitchell, whose riding takes in the coastal areas where opposition is growing, spoke Friday to The Free Press about the issue.
PUBLIC COMMENT EXTENDED
Ontario’s Environment Ministry has extended the time citizens will have to submit comments on how to regulate proposed offshore wind farms.
The ministry has nixed Tuesday’s deadline and pushed it back two week to Sept. 7. The extension came after more than 650 citizens submitted comments, the biggest share from Southwestern Ontario where opposition has been mounting along the shore of Lake Huron.
