Wind farm gets planning ‘yes’

A major wind farm, which will have several turbines across a number of townlands in Agriculture Minister Brendan Smith’s home constituency of Cavan-Monaghan, has been given the go-ahead by An Bord Pleanala, despite a number of objections from residents in the area, including some landowners.

Galetech Energy Developments Limited/Airtricity were initially given permission for the project to extend over the sprawling townlands of Aghaway, Artonagh and Bindoo, near the town of Cootehill in Co Cavan.

The area where the windfarm is to be developed is some 15km east of Cavan town and approximately 8km from the neighbouring town of Cootehill.

One local resident, Paul Smith of Tullycoo, who expressed opposition to the number of turbines proposed, has claimed there are “a lot of local concerns over the visual impact on the landscape and skyline”.

He said he felt the project might also impact on the market value of lands in the area and cause a deterioration of the road network.

A Cavan County Council spokesman confirmed approval of the project and said two proposed turbines were to be removed from the scheme due to the concerns raised.
