Tilba turbines clash with heritage

The Tilba District Chamber of Commerce in South East New South Wales says it is worried that private wind turbines are down-grading heritage values.

A large structure has been built on a property in the Tilba Conservation Area, which is protected by the National Trust in order to maintain its historic look.

But the Chamber’s President, Sol Romana-Clark, says State regulations over-ride the National Trust and local council planning regulations.

He says the Chamber supports green energy, but the position of infrastructure should be monitored.

“It’s not an issue about green energy, because many of us, and most of us, love green energy,” he said.

“We’d like to see more wind turbines go up in places that are of less heritage significance or that haven’t been classified.

“So it’s just our concern to protect the heritage area.”

Mr Romana-Clark says state support is possible in the near future.

“That is the only way that we could get protection, and it just so happens that the Heritage Council of the state of New South Wales is making a visit to us on the 2nd of September,” he said.

“Many of us in the community are pretty enthused about that, because that would give us a chance to get a State Heritage Listing, which would be much more protection.”
