Council moves on wind turbines

Halifax regional council has taken another step towards expanding the number of wind turbines in the municipality.

But questions about the development process remain.

HRM staff presented a report requesting that individuals be allowed to construct wind turbines on an “as of right” basis – meaning so long as zoning requirements are met and permits obtained, construction can go ahead.

But Coun. Jennifer Watts said public consultation is necessary before council agrees to “as of right” projects.

“In this particular case, it really is putting the focus and pressure at the front of the decision making, to be very clear, if there are concerns, are they addressed,” said Watts.

Hearing
The municipality will hold a public hearing in the fall to get feedback on the proposed land-use regulations concerning the turbines.

• No official date has been set.
