STAR LAKE – The Adirondack Park Agency Board agreed Friday to allow the installation of a temporary 164-foot tower with weather-monitoring instruments at Benson Mines to determine whether there is enough of a breeze to justify a wind-farm proposal.

The owners of Benson Mines have proposed up to 10 wind turbines for their more-than-3,000-acre property in the town of Clifton.

The board’s approval is for a 10-inch-diameter pole and wind-measuring instruments.

APA staff recommended that the equipment operate for up to five years to allow for breakage due to rough winters, but the board instead approved the permit for two years.

“Our board felt two years was good and the owners of Benson Mines could come back if they needed more time,” APA spokesman Keith P. McKeever said. “Other than that, it was approved unanimously.”
