GreenSky gets green light on M. Smithfield wind power study

Middle Smithfield Township has taken another step in exploring the feasibility of developing wind power to reduce its electric bills.

GreenSky Technologies, a start-up alternative energy developer whose principals include original Country Club of the Poconos landowner William “Dee” Rake, wants the township to engage it in evaluating township-owned property at CCP for wind generation.

Supervisors agreed Thursday to authorize GreenSky to seek proposals from three other companies that would study the feasibility of CCP wind currents for generating one-to-five megawatts of power.

GreenSky is promoting a new “vertical” wind generation process to develop electricity the township could use for its own needs or sell back to MetEd on the electrical grid.

GreenSky will solicit feasibility study proposals from the three groups – including St. Francis University of Pennsylvania – and bring the study proposals back to the township.

If Middle Smithfield supervisors agree to retain one of the three consultants, the township will pay the study costs, plus a fee to GreenSky equivalent to 15 percent of the study amount.

So far, the township hasn’t committed to spending any money on the wind project.
