New windfarm at Carno approved by planning committee

Proposals to erect 12 wind turbines near Carno were granted conditional approval by a meeting of Powys County Council’s planning Comittee on August 12.

Members voted largely in favour of the windfarm project to be known as ‘Tirgwynt’, with seven voting in favour and two voting against.

A protest by various town councillors, mayors and members of the public was staged outside the Welshpool council offices shortly before the meeting, calling for a full public enquiry to be held into the transport route to be taken by lorries carrying components for the turbines.

Subject to over 60 conditions, the Tirgwynt proposals received 80 objections and over 200 letters of support.

Initial proposals were put forward requesting 22 turbines to be built on the site, although this was reduced to 12 following consultation with residents and consideration of visual impact, among others.
