Wind turbine plans for Mouldsworth withdrawn

Controversial plans to build a wind turbine as big as Big Ben in a beauty spot have been withdrawn.

Farmer Peter Willis, of Mouldsworth Hall Farm, Mouldsworth, Chester, has retracted his application to Cheshire West and Chester Council to construct a 50 metre to 76m-high turbine on a west Cheshire plain.

Mr Willis wanted a Enercon-48 model wind turbine to generate energy for an organic farm and a vegetable box business, with surplus energy being sold to the National Grid.

He told the Leader: “The reaction to my wind turbine proposal from the local community has been vociferous and largely negative.

“I am disappointed and don’t agree with the accuracy of some of the statements made in opposition, but I have to accept that most people in the locality are against this development.

“Therefore, despite the viability and likelihood of planning approval, I have decided to withdraw the planning application.”

Residents voiced concerns about the proposed green-belt site, which a number of villages and hamlets overlook.

Margaret Steward, of Well Lane, Mouldsworth, co-chairman of Manley and Mouldsworth Action Group (MMAG), said a turbine could affect migratory birds, cause TV interference and have a negative influence on house prices.

Opponents also put up protest signs around the surrounding area in order to voice their discontent.

The protest took a dramatic twist last week after a kitchen knife was found embedded in one of the protest signs. A number of other signs were removed or destroyed.

The incidents were not linked in any way to Mr Willis.
