Wind farm plans are revealed

Scarborough Evening News, www.scarborougheveningnews.co.uk 11 August 2010

Plans for a major new wind farm in the heart of rural Ryedale have been revealed by energy company npower.
A two-day public display has been arranged for the village of Rillington, where about 3,000 local residents have been invited to see plans for the scheme.

npower have revealed the scheme could see up to ten of the huge wind turbines situated on farmland at East and West Heslerton midway between Malton and Scarborough.

Local farmers Roz and Paul Stephens said they only became aware of the plan when npower placed a 70 metre mast on an adjacent farm to measure wind speeds in the area.

Mrs Stephens said: “We have visited wind farms in north Wales and there’s no way we would want one on our doorstep. I think they are a waste of time because when the wind stops blowing you have to utilise some other form of power such as nuclear. I think they are hideous.”

The couple said they fear the skyline of the area will be blighted by the turbines, which can reach a height of 125 metres.

Richard Best, developer at RWE npower renewables, said: “We will provide feedback forms at the exhibitions and welcome comments from those living in the area.

“Onshore wind farms are vital if the UK is going to make its contribution to the global effort to tackle climate change.”

The public exhibitions will take place on Friday August 20, between 4pm and 7pm, at Rillington village hall, followed by a viewing the following day from 10am to 4pm.
