Swampscott gets grant to study wind power off Forest Avenue

By George Derringer, Swampscott Reporter, www.wickedlocal.com 8 June 2010

Swampscott – Swampscott will get a $75,000 grant from the state to study the feasibility of a wind turbine off Forest Avenue.

State Rep. Lori Ehrlich announced the grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center to explore the feasibility of developing a 600 kW wind project on land adjacent to the Swampscott Middle School’s athletic fields. The site is on town-owned land, adjacent to the Middle School and its accompanying open athletic fields.

The study will include wind monitoring, wind resource analysis, financial projections, a permitting plan and an acoustic study.

Ehrlich said the Renewable Energy Committee has been seeking the grant for some time and said committee member Milton Fistel, an engineer, has “been working very hard on the (grant) writing and has been keeping me informed so I can push behind the scenes.”

An e-mail from Ehrlich was read at Tuesday night’s meeting of selectmen and was greeted enthusiastically. More about the Commonwealth Wind Program can be found at www.masscec.com.
