No relief for land owners affected by wind farms

People who find themselves living next door to a wind farm are unlikely to have their land compulsorily acquired, despite some residents complaining that the turbines are hurting their health. Michael Pickering, an expert on compulsory acquisition with LAC Lawyers in Melbourne, said there is no straightforward legal process open to landowners who believe their properties should have been acquired before energy companies were permitted to erect large turbines. A wind farm has been established at the western Victorian town . . . Complete story »

Farmers flee as turbines trigger despair

For 35 years, Noel and Janine Dean lived on a small western Victorian farm, where they raised crops, cattle and three children. They planned to spend the rest of their lives on that lush, green plot of land, but that would change three years ago, when an executive driving a red BMW approached the gates of their property, wound down his window and asked: “You got anything against wind farms?” “As long as they’re not noisy I don’t,” replied Mr . . . Mars Hill windmills prompt civil lawsuit

MARS HILL, Maine – Wendy Todd acknowledged Tuesday afternoon that she and her husband, Perrin Todd, knew that wind towers likely would be erected behind their property before they started building their home on the east side of Mars Hill in late 2005. “We knew it was likely,” she said. “But we had educated ourselves about the project. We attended at least two informational meetings before the project began and another meeting before the permit for the project was approved. “During . . . Complete story »

Alexander hits "national windmill policy"

Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today asked the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, of which he is a member, “If the title of this hearing is ‘Clean Energy Revolution,’ then why don’t we have a clean energy standard? Why are we leaving out nuclear power which produces 70 percent of our carbon-free electricity today?” “There is a renewable electricity standard in the House bill that requires utilities to create 20 percent of their electricity by 2020 from a narrowly . . . Texas wind power: the numbers versus the hype

Texas has repeatedly been lauded as a leader in wind power development. Some of that attention is deserved. In 2008, the state installed nearly 2,700 megawatts of new wind capacity. If Texas were an independent country, it would rank 6th in the world in terms of total wind power production capacity. The state’s Republican governor, Rick Perry, has been among the state’s most ardent wind power boosters, declaring a few years ago that “No state is more committed to developing . . . Wind farm threat to property prices

People living near a site earmarked for a wind farm near Stone say their properties have plummeted in value since the scheme became public. Householders living near to Aston Hall Farm between Aston and Burston say a proposal to install three turbines on the land by Severn Trent Water has already blighted property prices. Homeowner Rob Jackson, whose Enson Lane home is 520 metres away from the site of a proposed turbine, said the value of his house had dropped . . . Complete story »
