Turbine traffic plans rejected

Proposals to route massive wind turbines down the A161 from Goole through Swinefleet and Eastoft towards Keadby and Crowle were thrown into doubt this week.

The move follows North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) rejecting the plans put forward by RES Ltd on Monday night – whilst part of the route is in the East Riding of Yorkshire, the planning approval relates to across the county border.

RES Ltd has a planning approval to build a large wind farm near to Keadby following a long Public Inquiry. As a result the Secretary of State agreed to a condition that none of the construction traffic should go through the villages and that the site should be accessed off the M180 and then off the A18.

Following a previous plan to extend the Keadby Power Station a private road was constructed for this purpose and whilst it needs a rail crossing and a bridge to complete the road, if it was constructed then there would be no need to transport this traffic through the villages.

Local MP Ian Cawsey chaired a public meeting in Ealand this week where people from all over the area attended to express their concerns, and it was revealed NLC had rejected the plan.

Mr Cawsey said: “Whilst it is a welcoming sign that North Lincolnshire Council has rejected these proposals nevertheless that does not mean we can be complacent.

“We fully expect that RES Ltd will submit a revised plan and whilst we do not know whether that will impact on our area we must be vigilant and continue to register our disapproval.

“I also hope that ERYC will look at the impact of this and keep local parishes informed. I must thank Coun Trevor Barker, who is the North Lincolnshire Councillor for Eastoft for contacting Swinefleet Parish Council and other interested people as this has helped to form a strong alliance against these palns all the way along the proposed route.”

He added: “The Secretary of State was quite clear that the movement of the construction traffic and the turbines had to be kept out of the villages. There is an ideal nearly complete route off the A18 which could achieve that so RES Ltd should put their efforts into that rather than upsetting local communities in the area.”

It was pointed out at the meeting that RES Ltd had said they could construct their wind farm without needing to use village routes.
