A towering wind turbine will become a landmark in Outwood if supermarket chain Morrisons builds a carbon-cutting project.
The 50 metre-high turbine could be built at a depot at 41 Industrial Park as part of the firm’s bid to generate 10 per cent of its power from renewable sources.
The turbine will be used as a monitoring station to measure wind speeds at the site for two years before a decision would be made on whether to install a permanent one there.
Morrisons says it is exploring several sites around the country, and has submitted a planning application to Wakefield Council after selecting Outwood as a viable option.
Local councillors say they are investigating the plan, which has met opposition from residents who fear it will create noise.
Bob Sykes, 69, a former engineer who lives on nearby Potovens Lane, said: “These machines, which can stand from anything between 30 to 50 metres high, develop a relatively small amount of power and can be heard from up to half a mile away.
“Those who have the misfortune to live in that area will hear the unending ‘whoosh’ of the blades.”
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We are investigating potential locations for wind turbines, across a number of sites, as part of its target to source 10 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2010.”
