Planning Board Chairman Bob Patterson presented the Portland Town Board with a draft of a proposed wind energy conversion system local law developed by his committee.
He asked the town board members to review the document carefully and offered to have the planning board meet with the councilmen to discuss it.
Patterson recommended the board consider adopting a three to six month moratorium on wind towers until the proposed law is in place.
“I also recommend the town opt out of the tax exempt status wind energy developers are eligible to receive,” he said.
In other zoning business, Patterson recommended the town board consider increasing the height of fences required around swimming pools from four feet to six feet.
“We have had a number of special use permit applications for a higher fence because the pool owners say youngsters are climbing over the four foot high fence to swim in their pools,” he explained.
Van Buren Bay residents are discussing establishing zoning regulations for their community that would serve as an overlay to the town’s zoning laws, he said.
Patterson also said the planning board is looking to establish a local law that would prohibit junk vehicles being stored out side.
“The state law says one junk vehicle is permitted, our law would set that number at zero,” he said.
