Contact eyes North Island wind farm

New Zealand’s Contact Energy said it is considering building a new 177-megawatt windfarm on the Puketoi range near Dannevirke on the North Island.

Contact said in a statement today the NZ$500 million (US$380.8 million) proposed project would comprise about 65 turbines and would produce enough electricity for up to 86,000 homes.

The company had already signed a land use permit with a property owner in the area and said it was in consultation with other landowners in the area and the local community.

Contact chief executive David Baldwin said the project would take about two years to build with first power from the development planned for 2013.

The Dannevirke area lies roughly 200 kilometres north of the New Zealand capital of Wellington.
