Nova Scotia green-lights wind farm on Nuttby Mountain

Nova Scotia has given conditional approval for a large wind farm between Truro and Tatamagouche that’s expected to generate power for 15,000 homes.

EarthFirst Canada Inc. plans to spend more than $70 million on up to 21 turbines along Nuttby Mountain, the highest point in mainland Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia Environment Minister Mark Park approved the project earlier this week on the condition that EarthFirst submit an environmental protection plan and monitor birds and bats in the area.

Linda Chambers, CEO of EarthFirst, calls the minister’s approval a “significant step.”

“We’re not quite there yet,” Chambers said. “We still need federal environment approval and we’re still finalizing our turbine purchases.”

EarthFirst plans to start construction next summer.

The project is one of a handful of wind developments that Nova Scotia Power is counting on to help it meet provincial targets for renewable energy.
