Monster wind turbines alert

The large number of windfarm applications in Stocksbridge and Penistone areas has led me to write to draw to the attention of your readers a number of facts about the proposed development of 410 feet high structures at Sheephouse Heights, which threaten to desecrate our local countryside.

Residents in Stocksbridge – on both sides of the valley – have had no opportunity to fully appreciate the size of these ‘monster’ turbines and may not realise the importance of sending in their objections to Barnsley Planning Department. It seems ludicrous that the responsibility for the planning decision rests with Barnsley when the people of Stocksbridge will be as badly affected (if not more so) than the people of Penistone.

The amenities of our homes, gardens and local walks will suffer from the huge visual impact of these turbines, as well as TV signals and possibly wireless broadband and mobile phones.

During construction, the main route between Stocksbridge and Penistone (Underbank Lane) will be made very dangerous. This is a very busy road and bus route.

An oversimplified case has been made for wind power; it is not an efficient way of generating electricity nor, as some people believe, a free source on tap at all times.
