Sian shows support for countryside

The winds of change have ruffled Neath weathergirl Sian Lloyd.

The television presenter has joined more than 50 politicians, celebrities and business leaders in urging the Assembly to halt plans for an expansion of wind power in Wales.

The Gwlad Alliance – a group formed to protect the landscapes of Wales – drafted a letter addressed to First Minister Rhodri Morgan, asking him to reconsider wind energy policy.

The letter states: “We believe that there are issues surrounding wind farms that need urgent re-evaluation.

“We question the efficacy and efficiency of wind power, and believe that this headlong rush into wind power will have dire implications for the upland and coastal areas of Wales, the landscape, its people, its natural habitats, and its tourism industry – while having very little effect on reducing CO? levels.”

AMs argue that wind energy is the most commercially viable renewable technology, but the letter warns the habitats of many endangered animals and birds will be destroyed.
