Villagers step up turbine protest

Villagers are stepping up their protest against proposals which could see wind turbines on farmland near Darlington.

Billingham-based Pure Renewable Energy is considering applying for permission to erect up to 11 turbines on land bordering Darlington and Stockton.

Resident of surrounding villages were gathering in Bishopton to distribute posters opposing the turbines.

Six parish councils in the surrounding area have already expressed their anger at the proposals.

Each proposed turbine could be up to 100m (328ft) tall.

No formal application has yet been submitted to Darlington Council, which would consider the plans. The company has pledged to take the views of residents into account.
