Dozens of Plymstock residents besieged a planning committee meeting today as councillors met to consider a third attempt to get permission for two wind turbines at Coombe Dean School.
But Plymouth City Council’s planning committee decided to visit the controversial site before hearing any arguments about the plan.
The school wants to put up two wind turbines, which will be more than 15 metres high including the blades, to generate electricity.
Two earlier applications were withdrawn. In the latest plan the turbines are to be moved south and west.
The turbines will be visible from surrounding houses, but planning officers said they would not be considered a dominant feature on the landscape because they would be well within the school grounds and will have a woodland backdrop.
The hubs of the turbines would be as high as the two already outside the National Marine Aquarium on the Barbican, but the blades would be significantly larger – 9.6 metres in diameter compared with 5.5 metres.
