The protest group set up to fight plans to build five giant wind turbines in an area of beautiful Craven landscape has recruited its 200th member.
The turbines, proposed by a German energy company, and the hill they would stand on near West Marton would reach a height of some 1,000 feet and would be visible in all directions from the Three Peaks, Malham Tarn, Pendle Hill and the Trough of Bowland, some of the most outstanding scenery in Northern England.
Craven District Council is expected to announce a public enquiry soon but the council has lost faith with hundreds of ratepayers after granting much-opposed planning permission for a massive office block on heavily wooded farm land at the key entrance to the town.
Many residents in West Craven villages fear that the council will once again ignore popular feeling when it comes to the windfarm application. This led to the creation of the Friends of Craven Landscape (FOCL) which announced yesterday that it had just recruited its 200th member.
FOCL is backed by five other environmental groups but is hoping to attract even more supporters by the time the public enquiry is held. For more details, see www.focl.org.uk
