Wind project meeting

HENDERSON, N.Y. – The public weighed in on a proposal to provide power to Galloo Island off of Lake Ontario.

The Upstate New York Power Corporation’s Wind Project calls for a series of power lines through Oswego and Jefferson counties. Galloo Island, which spans only about four and a half miles, would have a number of wind turbines. Many farmers are concerned the transmission lines will disrupt their land.

“As you put a big power pole in the middle of a farm field that alters the ability to farm that field forever. And it affects how they plow, how they can plant. So it’s not just the foot print or the hole but it’s the whole pattern of farming that field that’s impacted,” Jay Matteson, Jefferson County Agricultural Director.

The Upstate New York Power Corporation says they will work to make a plan everyone can agree on. Galloo Island is a private island that is currently up for sale.
