Is it possible to have clean wind energy and keep residents happy who live near the wind farms? That’s the crucial question facing Logan Township officials, as Gamesa plans to put 25 turbines on nearby ridges.
Becky and John Folk have lived in the hills of Logan Township for 20 years. They enjoy the scenery and quiet evenings, but all that could change, they fear, if wind turbines are put up along the ridge.
“They are massive,” said John Folk.
He’s also concerned with the noise. They and several neighbors are fighting the turbine development by sending letters and petitions to the township. However, to the surprise of supervisors, very few concerned residents actually showed up at the township’s meeting Thursday night.
At the meeting, Gamesa and the township agreed to changes in the windmill ordinance. The turbines have to be more than 2500 ft. away from property lines. They have to be 1.5 times shorter than the average windmill, and have a sound level no higher than 45 decibels.
The ordinance will be advertised for the public to review. It should be voted on sometime in July.
