Fun day celebrates halt to park wind farm plan

There’ll be plenty to celebrate at a community fun day in Westwood Country Park this weekend.
Campaigners are delighted at the council’s dropping of controversial plans to install a wind farm in the park at High Green.

The council agreed with critics who said the wind farm would be too close to homes and is now looking at alternative locations in Sheffield.

“The long-term future of the park now looks secure, though there are never any guarantees and we need to keep vigilant – wind farm developers do not give up easily,” said a statement by Andrew Redfern and Barbara Kingston, of the Save Westwood Country Park campaign.

“We will now work with the council leadership to ensure that Westwood Country Park gets the investment it deserves – something we believe they are very receptive to.”

Protesters are anxious to see Westwood formally removed from the council’s planning blueprint, the Sheffield Development Framework, as the preferred location for a large wind farm.

Meanwhile, council representatives and local MP Angela Smith are being invited to the Picnic in the Park on Sunday, which runs from noon to 4pm.
