Nature reserve wind turbine plans shelved

Controversial plans to put 18 wind turbines on a nature reserve near a major motorway have been shelved.

The Lancashire Wildlife Trust (LWT) included the wind turbines in its outline planning application for the Brockholes Nature Reserve, but has decided to remove them from the full application after several objections were raised by individuals and town planners.

Objectors had been concerned the huge, noisy, wind turbines could distract drivers on the nearby M6 and prove a blot on the landscape.

LWT Brockholes project manager Ian Selby said: “Planners said if you have these it will make the site look more like an industrial site and not a natural landscape.”

Feedback from the initial application has also led the Trust to finalise the location for the new floating visitor centre – the result of an international design competition won by Adam Khan Architects.

The distinctive floating island will now be located out of view of the motorway after the Highways Agency said it could distract motorists.

The centre will now be located on an area of the site in between the motorway and the River Ribble.
