A co-operative of 14 state utilities and the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electricity Corporation have purchased the rights to a 15 megawatt wind project in the Berkshires.
The co-op purchased the assets from Berkshire Wind Group LLC for $4 million, and gives the group rights to permits, agreements and engineering and construction work already completed.
The Berkshire Wind project on Brodie Mountain in Hancock and Lanesboro, Mass., plans to install 10 1.5 megawatt wind turbines on the mountain. The project, expected to cost about $45 million, is planned to be operable by the end of 2010.
Communities involved in the co-op project include Ashburnham, Boylston, Groton, Holden, Hull, Ipswich, Marblehead, Paxton, Peabody, Shrewsbury, Sterling, Templeton, Wakefield and West Boylston. All provide electricity at retail to their customers.
