Fort Kent: Town puts off wind power measure

FORT KENT, Maine – The Town Council took no action Monday on a citizen request to begin zoning changes aimed at regulating industrial wind-powered energy within the municipality.

Nearly 100 residents were on hand for the meeting in which Mark Aman presented the proposed ordinance amendment.

Aman wanted the council to ask the planning board to present the zoning change to voters.

Aman indicated that since all residents of Fort Kent could find themselves neighbors to wind-powered projects, they should all be allowed to vote on the matter at a town meeting.

Changes to Fort Kent’s zoning ordinance may be made only during the annual town meeting.

Citing a lack of detailed or specific information on any proposed wind-powered industry looking to establish itself in Fort Kent, the council took no action on Aman’s proposal.

Town Manager Don Guimond said a forum on wind energy, which was to be held in June, was postponed indefinitely due to the spring flooding. He said there are plans to hold such a forum.

Horizon Wind Energy of Texas is in the planning stages for a wind farm of up to 400 turbines in Aroostook County, and has been focusing on a forested area west of Bridgewater, according to company officials. Horizon, which is also operating under the subsidiary name Aroostook Wind Energy, has been quietly working on the project since 2005.
