Board wants to renegotiate wind energy pact

SOMERSET – The town board wants to renegotiate a community host agreement with Empire State Wind Energy.

The board is willing to give up some of the profits anticipated from the wind turbine project in order to assume less risk. ESWE would be rewarded with more profits, if it’s willing to take more risk.

“We decided to contact ESWE to see if they would be open to negotiating our profit-sharing percents we would get in the host agreement,” Supervisor Richard Meyers said after a lengthy Tuesday night meeting.

A letter to the Oneida-based firm will ask, “Are you willing to negotiate,” Meyers said. “We’re still looking to work with ESWE.” The board hopes for an answer by July 1.

The town board is willing to take less than 75 percent. The letter will go to Keith Pitman, President & CEO of ESWE.

The board also discussed legal fees with Town Attorney Edwin Shoemaker, who has not been at a meeting in several months. The lawyer is willing to work with the board, Meyers said.
