Barunga locals see red over wind farm lights

About 40 locals were at a meeting at Redhill last night to hear from the company Transfield Services about a wind farm planned for the Barunga ranges.

The company has moved into a feasibility study of the mid-north South Australian region and plans to build 40 to 60 wind turbines off Highway One between Adelaide and Port Pirie.

Some people at the meeting told the company’s representatives they are worried that red lights on the turbines will be an eyesore and that the rural landscape will become industrial.

Danny Neil from Transfield Services says the company now realises the red lights are a major issue for locals.

“I think the red lights is an issue that people are starting to recognise given the existing farms and that is something that we’re going to have to work on,” he said.

“In other places in Australia they haven’t needed the red light, so it’s really just with these recent wind farms where it’s become clear that it is an issue.”
